Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep is a Buddhist temple located in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The name of the temple is named after Doi Suthep, the name of the mountain it is located on. Situated 15 km from Chiang Mai city, Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep is a sacred site to both locals and Thai visitors. Fascinating views of Chiang Mai can easily be seen from the temple’s veiwing deck and that is another reason making Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep a favorite destination to all visitors.
Standing 1676 metres over Chiang Mai city, Doi Suthep is one of the most admirable religious destinations of Thailand. The temple is always crowded with spectators, especially during cooler weather and clear sky.
According to a legend of Doi Suthep, dating back to the 14th- century, there was a monk from Sukhothai having a vision of fire. The monk followed the fire in his vision and found that the fire turned into a relic of the Buddha. Promptly, he took the relic to his King. However, the relic failed to procreate its magical power, so the King lost interest in its.
Anyhow, the news was spread all over and reched to King Keu Na, one of the King of Lanna Kingdom. Once King Kue Na heard about the monk, he eagerly invited the monk to come to Chiang Mai and proposed to enshrine the relic. The construction was completed and arrangements were made to accommodate the relic. Unfortunately, the relic broke into two causing King Kue Na to come up with a new plan to enshrine the relic.
Once you arrive the foot of the temple, there are two ways to get to the top of it; hiking up along 300 steps of Naga staricase, or taking a convenient cable car.
Doi Suthep is a part of Doi Suthep National Park and there is only few of visitors realize the fact. Doi Suthep National Park covers 261 square kilometres of greenery hills. The park represents mixed deciduous and pine forest and there are over 300 bird species, approximately 2000 species of fern and flowering plants. The best time to observe bird species is during the late day and early morning when the birds can be seen evidently fluttering around the temple.
Another attraction located closely to Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep is Phra Tamnak Phu Phing, the vacation palace for the royal family. The palace is often included in tours to Doi Suthep, together with a trip to experince local culture and lifestyle of people in Hmong hill-tribe village.
A road to Doi suthep which was originally paved by the lead of Kruba Chao Sriwichai has made it easier and more convenient to pilgrims to visit Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep while the old hiking trail still exists for those yearning for a challenge and excercise. Taking either way to the temple will surely lead you to explore the beauty, the holiness and the legends of Doi Suthep, one of a must-visit attractions of Chiang Mai.
